I caught the vertical short-form of How Dare You? last year and already knowing how the story played out did absolutely nothing to diminish the experience. If anything, it made me appreciate the craft of it even more.
A Transmigration Drama Unlike Any Other
How Dare You? is not your standard transmigration Chinese drama. Where most stories in this genre deliver a straightforward fish-out-of-water romance, this one plays with multiple layers of reality in a way that pulls you in from the first episode and doesn't let go. The series opens playfully — almost deceptively unserious — before gradually peeling back to reveal something far more emotionally complex beneath the surface.
The plot might initially read as shallow, but that is entirely by design. The comedy, romance, and tragedy don't compete with each other here; they coexist with a balance that is genuinely difficult to pull off. Each theme retains its own weight without overwhelming the others, and the tonal shifts feel earned rather than jarring.
Stunning Visuals and a Standout Soundtrack
The cinematography alone makes How Dare You? worth watching. Every scene is meticulously composed, and the costumes are intricate and deliberately extra in the best possible way — a clear and loving tribute to the original donghua. The soundtrack does equally impressive work, amplifying both the comedic lightness and the heavier emotional beats without ever feeling manipulative. This is a series that is as visually and emotionally satisfying.

Wang Chu Ran and Cheng Lei: Chemistry That Commands Every Scene
Wang Chu Ran and Cheng Lei didn't just understand the assignment — they elevated it. Their on-screen chemistry is magnetic, and both actors bring a level of emotional complexity to their roles that makes the central relationship feel genuinely affecting.
Cheng Lei's portrayal of Xiahou Dan is a particular standout. The "mad tyrant" archetype could easily become a caricature, but Cheng Lei renders him intense, wounded, slightly unhinged, and deeply human all at once. Xiahou Dan's backstory is genuinely tragic, and Cheng Lei ensures you feel every layer of that pain without ever tipping into melodrama.
Wang Chu Ran as Yu Wan Yin is equally compelling. Her character is refreshingly pragmatic rather than blindly kind-hearted — she operates with clear moral boundaries and a sharp, grounded intelligence. Wang Chu Ran is fully immersed in the role and consistently commands attention in every scene she inhabits.
What I appreciated most about their dynamic is the emotional maturity at the core of the relationship. No manufactured misunderstandings stretched across ten episodes. No dragged-out breakups for the sake of tension. Just communication, loyalty, and two people who are genuinely adorable together. In the landscape of Chinese palace dramas, that kind of restraint is genuinely refreshing.
The Meta Layer: When the Leads Become Supporting Characters
One of the more fascinating structural choices in How Dare You? is that the central couple is occasionally sidelined — and it works. Because within the novel they've transmigrated into, the true main leads are actually Xiahou Bo and Xie Yong Er. Watching Yu Wan Yin and Xiahou Dan occasionally revert to their designated supporting roles within that in-universe story creates a genuinely interesting meta-narrative tension. It's a smart, self-aware storytelling decision that rewards attentive viewers.
An Ending That Needed More
My only real criticism of How Dare You? is the ending. After everything Xiahou Dan goes through or better particularly following the return to reality — the narrative needed to breathe. The emotional unpacking that the story had been building toward felt rushed, reduced to something closer to a teaser than a resolution. There was so much potential in those final moments, and the drama only scratched the surface of what the conclusion could have been.
Final Verdict
How Dare You? is a genuinely fun, visually stunning, and emotionally resonant Chinese drama that delivers far more than its playful exterior suggests. A near-perfect blend of comedy, romance, and tragedy, elevated by two exceptional lead performances and a story structure willing to subvert its own genre conventions. The ending leaves something to be desired, but the journey absolutely earns your time.
Rating: 4/5 Recommended for fans of transmigration Chinese dramas, palace romances, and morally complex historical leads.
