Is Pursuit of Jade Worth Watching?
Without a doubt, Pursuit of Jade (逐玉) has earned its place as my top drama of 2026. From its very first episode, this Chinese historical drama hooks you with a question that lingers long after the finale: who is truly noble — the one born with power, or the one who becomes worthy of it? If you are looking for a drama that blends political intrigue, breathtaking romance, and moral complexity, Pursuit of Jade delivers on every front.
Cinematography and Soundtrack: A Visual and Emotional Masterpiece
The production quality of Pursuit of Jade is nothing short of stunning. The intricate details of Lin'an village and the sweeping scenic shots of mountains and rivers make every frame feel intentional. One of the most striking stylistic choices is the use of contrasting color palettes — cool, muted tones signal darker, more toxic situations, while warm, vibrant hues accompany moments of love and hope. It is subtle, but it makes the emotional shifts feel all the more powerful.
The soundtrack is equally impressive. Rather than overwhelming the scenes, the music enhances them — building tension during battle sequences and adding quiet emotional weight to intimate moments. The fight scene scores in particular genuinely get your heart pumping.
And then there is the cast. This drama is full of absolutely beautiful people, which honestly makes it a little difficult to stay mad at the villains. Bad, but make it handsome.
While there are a few noticeably edited or cut scenes that give the pacing a slightly choppy feel in places, these moments do not significantly disrupt the overall flow of the story.
Cast and Performances: Everyone Pulls Their Weight
What separates a great drama from a good one is often the ensemble, and Pursuit of Jade gets this exactly right. Every character feels purposeful and fully realized — there is not a single role that feels like filler.
Tian Xi Wei is magnetic as Fan Changyu. Whether she is delivering devastating crying scenes, executing sharp fight choreography, radiating icy composure, or melting into her softest, most endearing moments, she transitions between each with effortless precision. She does not just perform Fan Changyu — she makes you feel her.
Zhang Ling He brings the proud, accomplished Marquis Xie Zheng to life with incredible nuance. His ability to communicate complex emotion through the smallest gestures keeps viewers completely in sync with his character's inner world.
Together, Zhang Ling He and Tian Xi Wei generate undeniable on-screen chemistry. Their dynamic is electric — tender one moment, tense the next — and their fight sequences carry both physical intensity and emotional depth that feel raw and completely earned.
Supporting Characters and Antagonists: No Wasted Roles
The supporting cast of Pursuit of Jade is one of its greatest strengths. Deng Kai's portrayal of Qi Min is a masterclass in playing a morally complex antagonist. The confrontation scene between the Sui brothers — Qi Min and Sui Yuanqing — is peak drama television, and Lin Mu Ran more than holds his own alongside him.
Then there is Yan Yi Kuan as Wei Yan, the Prime Minister of Yin. His performance is the kind that leaves you genuinely unsure whether you are watching a villain or simply a survivor. Was he truly evil, or just a man playing the hand he was dealt? That ambiguity is a testament to both the writing and Yan Yi Kuan's remarkable execution.

Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng: A True Power Couple
One of the most refreshing aspects of Pursuit of Jade is how it portrays its central romance. Fan Changyu does not stand behind Xie Zheng — she stands beside him. Their relationship is built on mutual respect, with neither overpowering nor being overly reliant on the other.
Throughout the drama, both characters grow independently while complementing each other beautifully. Changyu finds in Xie Zheng the guidance and security she needs. Xie Zheng, who had long been willing to die for his mission, finds in Changyu both the warmth of belonging and a love worth living for. They are two capable, self-sufficient people who also cannot truly exist without each other. That balance is rare, and Pursuit of Jade earns it.
Standout Scene: The Bath Scene and Its Symbolism
Among many memorable moments, the bath scene stands out as one of the most beautifully crafted in the drama. The use of Yin and Yang symbolism is not incidental — it deliberately blurs the line between vulnerability and intimacy. This scene is not about sensuality. It is two souls aligning through contrast and complement. It is the kind of scene that rewards paying attention.
Minor Criticisms
The editing does show signs of cut content, and a few transitions feel choppy as a result. It is not enough to derail the story, but it is noticeable. Additionally, for a character as feared and strategically brilliant as Xie Zheng, it would have been satisfying to see at least one full-scale battlefield sequence showcasing his combat skills. His reputation as a formidable Marquis is well-established through strategy and presence, but seeing that fearsome power in open battle would have elevated his character even further (then again it might be my bias showing and wanted to see more fight scenes from Zhang Ling He lol).
Final Verdict
Pursuit of Jade is not just a drama — it is an experience. With stunning visuals, a morally rich story, a powerhouse cast, and one of the most genuinely balanced central romances in recent Chinese historical drama, it earns every bit of its praise.
If you are a fan of Chinese historical dramas, xianxia romance, or just exceptional storytelling, put Pursuit of Jade at the top of your watch list. You will not regret it.
